CAREER STATS
- 1975- First career Winston Cup start at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the World 600.
Started 33rd and finished 22nd and earned $2,425. He finished one place higher than Richard
Childress.
- 1979- Rookie of the year title. Won first Winston Cup Race, the Southern 500, at Bristol
International Raceway. Won first career pole position in NAPA 400 at Riverdale Raceway in 24th
career attempt.
- 1980- Won first Winston Cup Championship in only second full season. Only
driver to win rookie title and championship back to back.
- 1981- Won first one million with 25th place finish at Marinsville, in his 76th start.
- 1986- Won 2nd NASCAR Winston Cup Championship with five wins, 16 top five, and 23 top
ten finishes.
- 1987- Won 3rd NASCAR Winston Cup Championship by capturing 11 races, 21 top-five, and 29
top ten finishes. Named American Driver of the Year and NMPA Driver of the Year.
- 1990- Earned his 4th Winston Cup Championship by winning 9 races, 18 tip-five, and 23
top-ten finishes. Won a record $3,083,056, and was named NMPA Driver of the Year.
- 1991- 5th NASCAR Winston Cup Championship
- 1993- Won sixth NASCAR Championship by winning six points races in addition to
two Busch Clashes, and a 125 mile qualifier, posted 17 top-five and 21 top-ten finishes.
Won a NASCAR Winston Cup record of $3,353,789, breaking his old record set in 1990.
- 1994- Won seventh NASCAR Winston Cup Championship by winning at Darlington, Bristol,
Talladega, and Rockingham. He posted 21 tip-five and 25 top-ten finishes. Won Championship
with a 444 point lead over second place Mark Martin. Won $3,300,733, topping the $3 million
mark for the third time in five years.
- 1995- Won sixth Busch Clash and fifth 125 mile qualifier at Daytona. Won 2nd IROC
Championship with two victories at Daytona and Talledaga. Posted wins at North Wilkesboro,
Sears Point, Indianapolis, Martinsville, and Atlanta. Finished 2nd in the Winston Cup Points,
34 behind Jeff Gordon. First driver to go over the $25 million mark.
RICHARD CHILDRESS
Since 1984, the Richard Childress Racing Team has earned six Winston Cup Championships,
59 wins, 172 top-five and 249 top-ten finishes in 349 startes and earned more than $20 million-
all of which are Winston Cup highs for that period.
During that same period, the team became the first to post the sixth straight $1 million
season (1986-91). They have finished in the top three in points in nine of the last ten
seasons and have won a race every year since 1983.
